I found I couldn't put into words how profoundly I felt the loss of Howard Zinn. I liked what Naomi Kline said - that we have all lost our favorite teacher.

Becky, I find I need to focus in a tighter circle when the desparate feelings rise. I have started walking again with my son. I am concentrating on the next 2 months of tasks in the school gardens. And I am pushing to get a contractor to finish my rehab. Tiny sphere of influence for katecontinued. How about you?

i too found comfort in Naomi Kline's words- that teacher we've all had that changed our lives forever, except that he was that favorite teacher of millions. and Noam Chomsky, ever the finder of the perfect word or phrase, describing his old friend as "irreplaceable".

such a crushing blow, this loss.

i think your way of coping is similar to mine. i don't have a project such as yours going but pulling in to my core beliefs and translating them into some albeit small daily action helps. howard said, "live now the way human beings should live." and i find comfort in that walk. also, naomi shihab nye's poem "The Art of Disappearing" is on my mind alot, particularly that phrase, "walk around feeling like a leaf. know you could tumble any second." and andrea gibson's line concerning fearless stars from Pole Dancer, "how they never speak guardrail, how they only say fall."

Becky, your sampling of these expressions were such a delicious find today. I keep rereading each one, not sure which pleases me more. Okay, now I am crying. I'm touched.
